James Scales Dismissed: Next Man In

Scales’ dismissal makes a young DB unit even younger.

Mark Helfrich announced Saturday that defensive back James Scales has been dismissed from the Ducks’ football team for a violation of team rules.  The redshirt sophomore from Greensboro, North Carolina amassed 12 tackles in 10 games over the last two seasons.  Reggie Daniels, Oshay Dunmore and the Amoako twins – all redshirts last season - will look to jump into the open reserve spot left by Scales.

The starting secondary will likely look the same as it did this year.  Terrence Mitchell, Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Brian Jackson return as starters on a young and talented defensive back unit.  The free safety spot will likely depend on the health of senior-to-be Avery Patterson, who injured his knee during the Cal game last season.  If Patterson is not healthy, Erick Dargan will likely start as he did for the last three games of the 2012 season.  Dargan had four picks in his three starts to end the season, including two picks in the Fiesta Bowl.
