There are times when a calm demeanor and patience help turn a team around. Now is not that time. The Duck basketball team lost its second straight game this week, being beaten by Cal. They were crushed by Standford earlier this week, and the Ducks came out and struggled early and then again late in the Cal game. There is a calm and rational explanation for this.
The Ducks’ starting point guard is still not on the court. The logical explanation for the losing streak is that Dominic Artis missed his third game, and the Ducks miss the guy who runs their offense. Makes sense, right? Well, if I’ve learned anything from Chip Kelly, it’s that Erin Andrews is a girl worth defending. Actually, Kelly taught us Duck fans that if you tell your guys it’s a team effort, then they play better as a team.
So what is Dana Altman to do? Having guys looking around for a scapegoat or waiting for Artis’s return will mean more losses in winnable game. He needs to hit the panic button, tell guys that now is not the time to wait for wins to fall in their lap. The Ducks have the talent and coaching to win the Pac-12. Somebody needs to remind them to play with urgency.
