Three Keys to Maximizing Oregon’s Horsepower

The Oregon Ducks have become known as “the Ferrari of College Football (or Lamborghini, take your pick)” due to the sheer speed they display on the field.  With Chip Kelly in Philadelphia, the keys to this Lambo now belong to Mark Helfrich, the team’s former offensive coordinator.  Luckily for Helfrich, Kelly left a clear blueprint for fine-tuning this high octane offense that averaged 49.5 points per game in 2012.

Here are three preventive maintenance keys for Helfrich to ensure the Ducks don’t need repairs mid-season:

  • Don’t manage Mariota.
    The sophomore quarterback was extremely efficient in 2012, throwing for 32 touchdowns against only 6 picks; unheard of from a freshman.  A legitimate top-ten Heisman candidate, Helfrich needs to find the happy medium between the running and passing games to optimize Mariota’s talent.  Oregon has its deepest receiving core in years, but the Ducks must stay committed to the option game, forcing defenses to respect the running game.
  • Let DASH run.
    Colt needs to contribute for this Ferrari to run smooth.

    Thomas Tyner is the real deal.  That’s the last time I’m saying it, my man-crush is formally announced.  Get this guy 5-10 touches per game on fly-sweeps, counters and sweeps.  Isolate him out in the open where he can use his speed, you will not regret it.  I even use him to return kicks in NCAA ’13, it spares De’Anthony a lot of punishment.

  • Don’t let Colt disappear.
    There were times last year were Colt Lyerla would dominate games, but there were also times when his name was never called.  He’s one of the most athletic tight ends in college football, don’t forget to look Colt’s way when the offense needs a lift.
