What a day of upsets this weekend of college football gave us. All up and down the east coast David was slaying Goliath. As fans, we live for the upsets. To be able to see a true underdog emerge victorious is why we love sports. So much action to cover from all over the country today, so lets get into it.
You would have thought Oregon was having a hangover from the Michigan State game when they were down 7-0 against Wyoming after the 1st quarter. Oregon quarterback, Marcus Mariota, woke up the troops and they proceeded to have another Heisman type game by racking up four touchdowns, leading his team to the 48-14 win. Alabama’s offense seems to be clicking at just the right time as they pounded Southern Miss, 52-12. It seems the Tide have settled on Blake Sims as their QB of the future.
This off season Oklahoma’s head coach, Bob Stoops, spent some time trash talking about the “weak” SEC. Today his team backed up his talk with a convincing 34-10 win over Tennessee. The Sooners are looking more and more like a contender as every week passes.
Georgia was hoping to keep it’s national title hopes alive with a win over South Carolina today, but ’Cock’s head coach, Steve Spurrier, had plans of his own. Thanks to South Carolina’s offense and a few breaks from the officials, the Gamecocks were able to beat the Bulldogs, 38-35.
Boston College’s quarterback, Tyler Murphy, had a career day rushing with 191 yards as he lead his team to an upset of No. 9 USC, 37-31. Now USC’s Steve Sarkisian will have to focus on winning the Pac-12 in order to have a chance at the Final Four.
LSU blanked UL-Monroe, 31-0. Les Miles hopes his offense can get up to speed before the tougher part of their schedule is upon them. Notre Dame took down Purdue, 30-14 to improve to 3-0. UCLA might be the most overrated team in the country right now after winning ugly again for the third week in a row against Texas, 20-17. The Bruins had to rally using their backup quarterback, Jerry Neuheisel, when Heisman candidate Brett Hundley left the game with a bruised elbow. Any chance of winning the PAC-12 or making the playoffs will depend on how serious Hundley’s injury is.
Ole Miss is firing on all cylinders now as they won, 56-15, over UL-Lafayette. The Rebels could be ready to give the SEC West a run for the money as the season goes on. Stanford rebounded from their loss last week with a win over Army, 35-0.
East Carolina scored 21 straight points and held on to upset Virginia Tech, 28-21. The Hokies must have thought their season would be a cake walk after beating Ohio State last week. You have to bring it every week or an underdog will knock you out.
Missouri’s Maty Mauk threw four touchdown passes to lead his team to a 38-10 win over UCF. The Tigers are quietly creeping up the polls and could be the favorite to win the SEC East. The honeymoon is over for Louisville’s Bobby Petrino as the Cardinals were upset by Virginia, 23-21. The Cards will still be a threat in the ACC this season, just not Saturday
Ohio State let out a lot of frustration after the Virginia Tech loss. Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett tied a school record with six TD passes as the Buckeyes routed Kent State, 66-0. BYU is looking to be a “bracket buster” for the playoffs as they beat Houston, 33-25. The Cougars have a high possibility of going undefeated as the toughest part of their schedule is now over. Baylor did what everyone expected as they marched all over Buffalo, 63-21. Bryce Petty will be in the thick of the Heisman conversation if he continues to put up video game-type numbers.
Now that rounds out our Top-25 for now, but here are few more updates from around the nation:
West Virginia squeaked out a win over Maryland, 40-37 with a last second field goal. Florida beat Kentucky in triple OT, 36-30. This now extends their win streak to 28 years over the ‘Cats. Michigan got out of their offensive funk with a 34-10 win over Miami (OH). Arkansas rushed for seven rushing touchdowns as they downed Texas Tech, 49-28.
Are things finally looking up in Fayetteville for Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema? Washington walked all over Illinois in the form of a 44-19 thrashing. Cincinnati beat Toledo, 58-34. What was impressive in that game was the Bearcats Gunner Kiel throwing for six touchdowns in his debut.
Great weekend of college football. With all the upsets and high scoring games, it was a weekend to remember. Now look for our playoff picture to become a little clearer as conference play begins. Florida State, Alabama, Oregon, and Oklahoma all seem to be the favorites for the four playoff spots — at least this week. As fans, let’s all cheer for more upsets and offensive records to be broken in the coming weeks.
