On Wings of Eagles — Chip Kelly’s Plan for Tim Tebow

Noah Smith FishWrap, FishWrap Archive

Many people assumed that one of the NFL‘s most polarizing players, Tim Tebow, was done as an NFL player.  Despite these assumptions, one coach, Chip Kelly, decided to sign him.  Kelly’s signing a polarizing player who many people doubt can even be a backup in the NFL shouldn’t surprise anybody, as Kelly has shown time and again that he doesn’t care what anyone else says about how he builds his team.  The question now becomes, what is Chip Kelly’s plan for Tim Tebow?

Conspiracy theories now abound as to what this man has planned for Tebow

NFL.com’s Judy Battista seems to believe that Tebow could have been brought in to be a two- point conversion battering ram.  In an article published earlier this week, Battista recalls the folk hero-like tales of Tebow punching the ball in against the Miami Dolphins in his first start of his fateful season with the Denver Broncos.  There could potentially be some credence to this idea, as Kelly has used specific plays for tw0-point conversions that have little to nothing in common with his normal offense, both at Oregon and with the Eagles.  Battista also touches on the fact that the NFL seems to be bound and determined to make two-point conversions more common, making an even stronger case that Kelly could be working on such a conversion offense with Tebow at the helm.

Mr. Sanchez seems to believe that Tebow is only here to be a camp arm.

One of the other many ideas is that Tebow has simply been brought in to be a camp arm, filling in for Sam Bradford until he fully recovers from his knee injury from last year.  As Conor Orr from NFL.com reported, Mark Sanchez certainly seems to believe this.  The biggest reason this doesn’t exactly sound like the whole story, as Mr. Orr indicates, is that if you’re looking for a guy to come in and throw to receivers in camp while your starter is injured, why would you pick the most inaccurate thrower on the market?

Is Marynowitz correct in his assessment and belief that Tebow has improved his throwing motion?

Then there is the third theory, which seems to hold the most weight: Tebow has been brought in to be just another QB.  Shocking I know, but what if Tim Tebow has been brought on board by Chip Kelly to be just another player to compete for a spot?  If this is the case, Kelly clearly thinks Tebow can compete with Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne for the third QB job.   ESPN’s Chris Mortensen even reported that the Eagles were trying to trade Barkley.  Philadelphia Eagles’ Vice President of player personnel, Ed Marynowitz, supported this theory when he said, ”…we had some conversations, some discussions, and we felt it was an opportunity to bring in somebody that could compete for a spot.”

Despite all of the wild conspiracy theories flying around about Tim Tebow’s role with the Eagles, everything out of Philly (Sanchez excluded) has said that he is a QB who has improved and could compete for a roster spot.  In the end, Chip Kelly’s plan for Tim Tebow seems to be the same as his plan for everyone else on his roster: Bring him in and see if he can win a job.

New 2024 FishDuck Publishing Schedule….

During the off-season the FishDuck.com publishing schedule will consist of articles on Mondays and Tuesdays. Do keep checking as new articles could be published during the week when a writer has something to say.

In mid-August of 2024, we will go back to the seven-days-a-week of articles during the football season as we did in the football season of 2023.

The Our Beloved Ducks Forum (OBD) is where we we discuss the article above and many more topics, as it is so much easier in a message board format over there.  At the free OBD forum we will be posting Oregon Sports article links, the daily Press Releases from the Athletic Department and the news coming out every day.

Our 33 rules at the free OBD Forum can be summarized to this: 1) be polite and respectful, 2) do not tell anyone what to think, feel or write, and 3) no reference of any kind to politics. Easy-peasy!

OBD Forum members….we got your back.  No Trolls Allowed!
