Just a couple weeks after dodging a bullet from Nebraska, Oregon fans have another coaching opening to worry about. Scott Frost, the Ducks’ dynamic offensive coordinator for the past two seasons, is rumored to be recruited by Colorado State for their head-coaching job.
Two weeks ago head coach at CSU Jim McElwain’s contract was bought out by Florida in an effort to fill its coaching vacancy after Will Muschamp stepped down. CSU has been on a vigorous hunt to find their next head coach while Dave Baldwin takes over in the interim. They are looking to “hurry” but not “rush” to find someone as soon as possible due to the upcoming Las Vegas Bowl against Utah this coming Saturday. Frost is at the top of their list.
Rumors started on Tuesday when ESPN analyst, Jeremy Fowler, tweeted that Colorado State’s search team “…is high on Oregon OC Scott Frost.” Some wishful fans even changed his Wikipedia page listing him as CSU head coach. While nothing has materialized yet, we know that Frost has been entertaining other coaching possibilities.
Frost reportedly interviewed with Tulsa about a week ago, even though he has since been taken out of consideration for the job. This time last year he reportedly interviewed for Boise State’s HC opening as well.
It’s not a wonder why Frost is exploring his options. He was a finalist for the Broyles Award this year which is given to the top assistant coach in the country. With head coach Mark Helfrich, he led the Ducks this season to become the 3rd highest team in the nation in total offense with 546 yards per game. He is also only 39 which makes him one of the younger coaches in college football, an asset to any team.
While nothing has been confirmed yet, and Frost hasn’t said anything about the position at CSU, be on the lookout for changes in the Oregon coaching staff. Frost is in the mix of names with a lot of other coaches. Interviews will be conducted today and tomorrow. With such a successful team, it’s hard to expect some of our coaches to stay around forever. We can only hope he stays put and the Ducks can continue their success on offense.
