Past Writers and Editors at FishDuck

Past Writers and Editors at FishDuck

The success at FishDuck can be attributed to the hard-working writers — and the caring editors who give their time to help the writers improve — who thus give our readers the wonderful content we are known for.

I have known all the writers that grace this page and are so grateful for their contributions to the site and for the friendship we have shared. For many, they are not the same writers now as when they arrived at FishDuck due what they have learned from the editors, and simply from getting a ton more writing experience.

We have had so many writers that I’ve lost count how many have gone on to bigger internships, part-time writing gigs, or full time careers in sports writing after their time at FishDuck. It has been part of our satisfaction watching the growth of the writers and editors, and observing the talent emerge. So, to our writers and editors, we continue to wish you well. And to others, if you would like to see the portfolio of a past writer, just click on his/her name.

I am also so thankful to have shared time with the former editors you see on this page. They gave so much energy and warmth to our writers, and I’ll always remember the banter that we have had together. We are all Duck fans who will always be connected, as we will always be friends. The lives of our volunteers change, as they do for us, and friends who once wrote or edited may someday be back—enduring my bad jokes and corny references. We had fun together and I do treasure it.

Thanks to all!

Hey! My name is Austin Willhoft and I'm currently a freshman at the University of Oregon studying Journalism. I lived my whole life down in sunny and beautiful Laguna Beach, CA where I completed all of my prior education. I always have been into sports writing/reporting mostly due to the fact that I love watching, analyzing, and playing all kinds of sports. However, if I were to narrow it down between two sports, it would be basketball and football, both of which I played heavily in high school. I'm thrilled to be working for FishDuck.com and most importantly being a third generation to attend the UO. Sko Ducks!

Bob Laws is a 4th generation Oregonian – going back to 1850 - and Duck fan, graduating from South Eugene HS in 1978. Bob went immediately into the Marines and served for the next ten years. After the Marines, Bob met his wife Rena of 26 years. The budding family, moved from Eugene to Kentucky to care for Rena's grandmother, where his wife's family have been since the earliest settling of Kentucky. Finally getting to college, Bob graduated from UK in 1994. Bob had to call up either KPNW or KUGN on Sunday's to find out if the Ducks had won. After ten years, the family moved to Tennessee as business dictated and remained there for eight years. When his two daughters were entering high school, the family moved to Arizona. Interestingly, Bob's oldest daughter was born in Eugene (5th generation Oregonian) and his youngest daughter was born in Kentucky (gazillionith generation Kentuckian), so his family consists of both Pac12 and SEC followers, as his son still lives in Tennessee. Bob has his own blog at azwebfoot.blogspot.com where he can do his number crunching with glee. Bob enjoys his fishing and hunting in the high country of Arizona where he lives (elevation 7,000 feet).

He switched to the green side when he committed to attend the U of O and witnessed his first ever Duck game: Oregon: 72, New Mexico: 0. That season turned into the magical roller coaster that was the year of the 2011 BCS National Championship against Auburn (I will argue to the death that he was down).

Aside from rooting for the Ducks, you can find Daniel rooting for the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Giants, Dodgers, and the 6th grade Eugene basketball tem he coaches. Avatar photoJay MacPherson

I told my wife I might spin some yarn for FishDuck. She replied "You know nothing, Jay Mac." She is probably correct, but since her name isn't Ygritte, I'm jumping in. First off, you should know that I know almost nothing about football. Not the terminology, the techniques, the standards, the...wait for it...tradition. So I'm figuring at least I've got 1/4 of this covered from Duck perspective. Until two years ago at the age of 55, I played sports regularly. Much of it was Ultimate (that disc game, which is now officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee). So what? Well, in Ultimate, every player is a receiver, a cornerback/linebacker, and (to varying extents per play) a quarterback. The skills at getting open, at covering, at throwing (successfully) all apply to football. The object simply behaves differently while in flight. Oh, and there are the plays: getting people open, keeping opponents from getting open, etc. Thus, after playing a somewhat similar game for 33 years, and being a coach much of that time, I might know a little bit about player heart, techniques, and teamwork. I hope I can illuminate something new in Duck sports for you once in a while.

Many of my friends attended the University of Oregon, however, including good friends from our HS Basketball team, and I have followed the Ducks religiously ever-after. I played college and AAU basketball and later become a Basketball referee, having published in their national journal.

An English major in college, I later went into textbook publishing, and later founded my own firm, NorthCoast Publishers (now defunct) in Cleveland, OH, where I have lived for the last 25 years. While in publishing, I coordinated product development, read every book that I published, and engaged in extensive copy editing, where appropriate. I also managed to pick up a graduate degree in Instructional Design, which helped immeasurably in the evolving digital environment of college publishing.

Married to a girl from Cleveland, we travel to the Pacific NW at least every other year and she has acquired my life-long love of fly fishing, having surpassed me in that particular sport.

Torrey Drake (Editor and Photo Archive Manager) is new to the Oregon area and FishDuck but is excited to edit something interesting, for a change. She's never played football at the professional level but was known to tear it up on her college powderpuff team, and with a last name like Drake it seemed inevitable that she become involved with the Ducks somehow. In her spare time she enjoys reading (Buzzfeed), playing the other "futbol", and watching movies with her husband. Originally from Texas, Torrey still roots for the Rice Owls of her alma mater but is often disappointed. She is looking forward to following the Ducks and seeing what the Portland area can do to help her step up her coffee game.
